Program notes
Explore the world of Donizetti's gorgeous Lucia di Lammermoor, whose plot unfolds at the end of the 16th century in Scotland. Amid a backdrop of turbulence and war between Catholics and Protestants, two families—the Ashtons and the Ravenswoods—vie for territorial supremacy and stand in the way of the burgeoning romance between Lucia (an Ashton) and Edgardo (a Ravenswood).
This new production by stage director Tatjana Gürbaca finds its strength in a dazzling cast, featuring Russian soprano Irina Lungu in the title role, Polish tenor Piotr Beczała—a favorite of the Zürich audience—as Edgardo, and Italian baritone Massimo Cavalletti, splendid in the role of Lucia's brother Enrico. We would remiss, in addition, not to mention the talent of Italian conductor Speranza Scappucci, whose direction of the Philharmonia Zürich contributes hugely to the dramatic intensity of this Romantic opera staple!
