Program notes

Experience the excellence of the chorus and orchestra of Milan's La Scala—perennial benchmark for operatic greatness—under the baton of the fabulous Fabio Luisi on a stage unlike any you've seen them on before: Milan Malpensa Airport! A dream cast, featuring some of La Scala's most acclaimed regular performers, offers up a surprising and captivating rendition of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore, staged by Grischa Asagaroff.

Vittorio Grigolo shines in the role of the peasant Nemorino, smitten with the beautiful and wealthy Adina (a sparkling Eleonora Buratto), who scorns his affection. When Sgt. Belcore, played by the fiery Mattia Oliviera, arrives and attempts to woo Adina, a worried Nemorino spends his meager savings on a "love potion" offered up by traveling doctor Dulcamara which is actually just cheap red wine—but it may yet have the effect he seeks… Set cheekily between the food court and departure gates of Milan's airport, the music and action of this bel canto masterpiece stand out strikingly against the decor, complemented by the cleverly contemporary costumes with period flourishes.
