Program notes

Set a date with the incomparable Jonas Kaufmann at the legendary Bayerische Staatsoper for a sublime performance of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Die tote Stadt, under Kirill Petrenko's expert direction. The action of this psychological drama follows Paul, who is mourning the loss of Marie amid the misty streets and canals of Bruges, Belgium. Devoted to her even after death, Paul has built her a "temple of memories" inside his house, despite the warnings of his friends. In the meantime, he has met the mysterious Marietta, in whom he sees a reflection of his young wife, leading to inner turmoil and a serious dilemma...
