Program notes
Gianni Schicchi is the final opera in Puccini's famous Il trittico. After the heated arguments of Il Tabarro and the tragic plot of Suor Angelica, Puccini borrows Gianni Schicchi from Dante’s The Divine Comedy to create a cynical comic work whose resounding success would overshadow the two previous opuses. The action takes place in 13th-century Florence: the rich old Buoso Donati dies, but not before having disinherited his entire family! After this astonishing discovery, they call on Gianni Schicchi, renowned for his impersonations, to act as Buoso Donati and give the notary new instructions. But all does not go as planned as the swindler has a mind of his own…
Rediscover one of Puccini's greatest masterpieces in this exceptional 2020 production at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, with the remarkable baritone Bruno de Simone in the title role.
