Program notes

Rediscover one of the world’s most famous operas with Dmitri Tcherniakov’s modern staging at the Staatsoper Berlin! Performed repeatedly at the opera, the story of Tristan and Isolde is known far and wide—a love potion, a challenge to the king, a tragic destiny—its themes have become staples of the musical repertoire. The Russian stage director offers an audacious production of this masterpiece with a stellar cast!

Having already staged this opera in 2005, Dmitri Tcherniakov focuses on the psychological aspects of the drama and brings the mythical lovers as close together as possible. Act III— which sees the end of the love affair between Tristan and Isolde—is striking in its powerful simplicity, and the famous Liebestod, where Isolde bids farewell to her dying lover, reaches unparalleled levels of emotional intensity. To crown it all, the stage director joins forces with a sublime cast: Daniel Barenboim—who has conducted this opera for more than 35 years—leads the Staatskapelle Berlin, Andreas Schager shines in the role of Tristan, while Anja Kampe is exceptional in her role as Isolde!
