A supreme work within the cello canon, this concerto crowns Dvořák’s career with virtuosity, palpable emotion, and a pronounced romanticism in every instant. Traversing across the first movement’s solemnity, the Adagio’s tenderness, the murmured reprise of a melancholic melody and the captivating finale’s fortissimo, the Concerto in B minor, Op. 104 has earned the title of “King” among the concertos for cello. And to think that Dvořák considered this instrument to be insufficient for a solo concerto, only suitable for the orchestra! He changed his mind in the US, after listening to another concerto by Victor Herbert (who had also been the principal cellist in Dvořák’s New World Symphony), which could also have inspired Dvořák’s choice of key in his own concerto. Born from a matrix of American and European influences, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto is widely considered one of the greatest compositions by the Czech composer.

Dvořák’s Cello Concerto No. 2 was premiered in 1896 in London. After having heard the Cello Concerto No. 2 in B minor, the story goes that Brahms said, “If I had known that it was possible to compose such a concerto for the cello, I would have tried it myself!" Dvořák’s Concerto is the true crowning achievement of his career, his supreme work. The first movement, noble and solemn, entitled the “King”—opposes the melancholic melody of the third movement’s Lasst mich allein (“Leave me alone”). This whispered reprise is an homage to Dvořák’s sister-in-law, who was formerly loved by the composer and died just a few days after the composition of the Cello Concerto No. 2. The orchestra ends with a throbbing and inflamed finale—one of the most majestic of the repertoire—whose power can not help but amaze.
