Dvořák’s Cello Concerto No. 2 was premiered in 1896 in London. After having heard the Cello Concerto No. 2 in B minor, the story goes that Brahms said, “If I had known that it was possible to compose such a concerto for the cello, I would have tried it myself!" Dvořák’s Concerto is the true crowning achievement of his career, his supreme work. The first movement, noble and solemn, entitled the “King”—opposes the melancholic melody of the third movement’s Lasst mich allein (“Leave me alone”). This whispered reprise is an homage to Dvořák’s sister-in-law, who was formerly loved by the composer and died just a few days after the composition of the Cello Concerto No. 2. The orchestra ends with a throbbing and inflamed finale—one of the most majestic of the repertoire—whose power can not help but amaze.
