The Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major, S. 124 is a piano concerto with orchestra by the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. The principal themes of this work are pinned on a sketch book dated to 1830 when Liszt was only 19! But the composition, however, was not finished until 1849, and the score was modified many times up until 1857, the date of the concerto’s publication. By the time the score was printed, the Piano Concerto No. 1 had already been played in 1855 in Weimar, with Liszt himself as the pianist and Hector Berlioz as the conductor! The greatest artists of our time perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major, S. 124 on medici.tv, your #1 classical streaming platform

Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is composed of four movements: 1. Allegro maestoso, 2. Quasi adagio, 3. Allegretto vivace - Allegro animato, 4. Allegro marziale animato. In this work, movements No. 2, 3, and 4 are played in one go. Despite its relatively short length, Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 was qualified by Bartók as “the first perfect composition of the cyclic piano sonata, with some common themes treated according to the principle of variation.” And yet, the premiere was not without criticism! The consternation amounted from the large and surprising use of the triangle in the score of Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1, as the triangle does not have a marginal role, but establishes a meaningful dialogue in music with the orchestra, and then with the piano.
