Schubert's Sonata "Arpeggione" is a sonata in A Minor composed for arpeggione and piano. What is the arpeggione? Good question! It is an instrument with six strings, tuned like a guitar...A curious creation which is so difficult to play that it was not hugely successful even at the time of invention in 1823. The repertoire for the arpeggione has remained very restricted for a long time: we can identify two works from the 19th century, this sonata by Schubert, and a concerto that has now disappeared. It wasn't until the beginning of the 21st century that the arpeggione resurfaced in the instrumentation of contemporary works. Nowadays, Schubert's Sonata "Arpeggione" is mostly performed as a transcription for viola and piano, and it is this version that you can on medici.tv!

Schubert’s Sonata “Arpeggione” is a sonata in A Minor for arpeggione and piano. The arpeggione is a curiosity and rare treasure in the history of instrumental music. It is a stringed instrument, just like a violin or cello, but with six strings (instead of the four strings of both the violin and cello), and it is tuned like a guitar. Schubert’s Sonata “Arpeggione” is one of the very, very rare works for this instrument, which disappeared as quickly as it appeared…Nevertheless, the arpeggione witnessed newfound popularity at the beginning of the 21st century: the day of its renaissance and revival had arrived! In 20 years, more than forty works were composed for this instrument. Despite this, the most popular version of Schubert’s Sonata “Arpeggione” is a transcription for viola and piano: take a look at this concert with Pinchas Zukerman and Marc Neikrug, a film in our archives from 1984!
