Sobre el programa...
Christophe Rousset conducts Rameau's Les Indes galantes, in a production directed by Laura Scozzi.
Les Indes galantes is the most achieved example of an opéra-ballet. In this specific genre, the plot is merely important, the sole matter is to entertain the audience. Around a recurrent theme, in this case love, several entrées offer as many light-hearted variations in which dance count as much as singing.
In 1697, André Campra gave to the genre of the opéra-ballet its structure with the Europe galante. Yet its is thanks to Rameau and his librettist Louis Fuzelier that the opéra-ballet reached its apogee. By setting the several entrées in the Indes ("the Indies"), which mean in the broadest sense Persia, Turkey or even Peru, the two artists tried to give to their work a perfume of exoticism. This extra-European setting is also an excuse for unleashing the composer's imaginative creativity, as the very famous "Air des sauvages," merging an idealized "savagery" with the refinement of 18th French orchestration, can bear witness.
The Baroque music ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, under Christophe Rousset's baton, performs Rameau's Les Indes galantes at the Opéra National de Bordeaux in a sensual and politically engaged production directed by Laura Scozzi, on the occasion of the festivities organized to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Jean-Philippe Rameau's death.
