Sobre el programa...
In the second concert of Rodion Shchedrin's 85th birthday concert series, the great Russian maestro Valery Gergiev leads the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra and Choir and the Sveshnikov State Academic Russian Choir in Shchedrin's Carmen Suite, a one-act ballet based on excerpts from Bizet's opera, Shchedrin's Concerto No. 1 for Orchestra "Naughty Limericks", and extracts from the composer's opera two-act A Christmas Tale. They are joined by a talented cast of singers, led by soprano Pelageya Kurennaya, mezzo-soprano Yekaterina Sergeyeva, and soprano Larisa Yudina.
The great Russian composer and pianist Rodion Shchedrin turns 85 years old on December 16th, 2017, and in celebration, the Moscow Philharmonie and Mariinsky Theater host a grand series of concerts featuring all-Shchedrin programs. Mikhail Pletnev leads the Russian National Orchestra and Valery Gergiev leads the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra, joined by some of the most accomplished Russian musicians in today's international classical music scene, including cellist Mischa Maisky, soprano Pelageya Kuriennaya, and International Tchaikovsky competition laureates Alexander Ramm (cello) and Sergey Redkin (piano), not to mention the great Rodion Shchedrin himself!
