Chick Corea and Steve Kujala, Live in Munich

During the 1980s, the Munich Summer Piano Festival became a rich prospect for fans of Chick Corea, a place where he performed solo concerts (in '82 and '83), duets with the likes of legendary vibraphonist Gary Burton and the father of jazz-classical fusion Friedrich Gulda, as well as performances in groups with his Akoustic Band and more. Here, in '85, we see him join forces with the flutist Steve Kujala, a prodigious sessions musician who won a prize at the famed Montreux Jazz Festival at just 17 years old. 

Kujala had been part of one of Chick's many formations, a quartet, from 1982 onwards, and two years later they decided to record a duo album entitled Voyage. Naturally, this concert features tracks from the album, including the sublime "Mallorca," which Corea originally penned alongside the iconic flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía. This, alongside 20-minute, free-wheeling improvisations, pictures Corea at a real artistic nexus. The pair unspool deliciously intricate melodies, breaking new ground and voyaging into unknown harmonic and rhythmic territories as they go.
