Sobre el programa...
In this opening concert of the Sons d’hiver Festival, relive solo and duet piano performances by two leading lights of French jazz and improvisatory music, Bernard Lubat and Martial Solal. Full of surprise and adventure, their style is rich and audacious, founded on the thrill of discovery.
The French drummer, pianist, vibraphonist, composer, and multi-instrumental Bernard Lubat has been an exceptional innovator of diversity in jazz since the mid-’70s. Alongside jazz musicians Stan Getz, Max Roach, and André Ceccarelli, he was one of the first to experiment with free jazz in France, alongside Jef Gilson, Michel Portal, François Jeanneau, and Henri Texier. He also accompanies stars of the chanson, including Claude Nougaro, and works in the field of contemporary music with ensembles Double Six and Laborintus. He created the Uzeste Musical Festival in 1977 in his hometown, as well as the multifaceted ensemble La Compagnie Lubat.
French pianist, composer, arranger, and conductor Martial Solal has been an internationally-renowned musician since the ‘60s. From the ‘50s onwards, he has participated in multiple recordings and has worked as accompanist in the jazz clubs of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Throughout his career, he has played in bands with Paul Motian, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Sidney Bechet, Art Farmer, and Dave Douglas. His musical originality and his brilliant technical skill make Martial Solal one of the greatest musicians in the history of jazz.
