Sonata in D Minor, K. 141 is a piano work by the Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti. The piece was published only in 1739 without the author’s final edits, but its composition dates back to a much earlier period: the Sonata in D minor, in fact, is a youthful work by Scarlatti, although it shows a mastery of the Italian composer, worthy of his most beautiful pages. Journalist Renaud Machard, reflecting upon the score, stated: “It is more impalpable than the Aria of the Goldberg Variations, more disruptive than the Sarabande of the Cello Suite No. 5 in C Minor by Bach, this sonata BWV 1011, so sad that it almost make the stones weep, is something amazing!”

Scarlatti’s influence is without doubt profound in the history of music, especially for piano and harpsichord music and for the sonata repertoire. Although it remains little-known to the general public, the Sonata in D minor has earned a special place in the heart of the most refined and exigent music lovers, thanks to the power of its baroque genius. The Sonata in D minor is a great example of Scarlatti’s genius! The most precise and sharp description has been given by Gabriele D’Annunzio in his novel Leda senza cigno (“Leda without swan”): “The grapes tumble down the smooth and rosy steps where the water falls in small cascades. [...] The pearls multiply as if they were a delicate hail, they run everywhere, shining, resonating, bouncing, and blending with the streams. And they look like the precious water bubbles, or the droplets of dripping Beauty [...] That is Domenico Scarlatti Sonatas.” What are you waiting for?
