Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique" was the Russian master's last symphonic work. He conducted the premiere himself on October 16, 1893, but in an awkward manner that left the public unconvinced. The work was performed again a few weeks later under the direction of Eduard Nápravník and proved successful, but Tchaikovsky had already passed away and the work revealed a new dimension: its prophetic character, heralding the tragic death of its author, appeared in all its fatal splendor. Tchaikovsky's Sixth is an absolutely breathtaking masterpiece. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique” in B Minor is a remarkable work in more than one aspect. Firstly, it is the only one of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies (and one of the very rare works of the symphonic repertoire) whose last movement is an Adagio and not a “loud allegro,” in the words of the composer himself. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique” in B Minor has a curious backstory: during its composition, the author seems to have had a prophetic vision of his death. This perspective strongly underlines the work. The real emotional rollercoasters of the first movement, the incorpation of references to religious Orthodox music, the unparalleled theme of fatum so dear to the composer, also representing an inevitable destiny that man cannot fight against, and the heartbreaking final Adagio make the Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique” a kind of retrospective autobiography of Tchaikovsky.
