He moved to the United States, where he was not happy: he did not like the country and missed his beloved Hungary terribly. Additionally, he was faced with great financial difficulties. Bartók refused any form of financial support that looked like a handout, so American artists came to his aid by commissioning him. Bartók composed his Concerto for Orchestra on commission from conductor Serge Koussevitzky.

Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra was premiered in 1943 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Traditionally, the concerto form involves a solo instrument, enhanced by the accompaniment of an orchestra. In his Concerto for Orchestra, Bartók breaks with this tradition and makes the orchestra the star of the work, almost inventing a new genre! Concertos for Orcehstra had been composed before, the first being a work by Paul Hindemith, composed in 1925, but Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra is by far the best known. This concerto for orchestra gives each section of the orchestra the opportunity to demonstrate its virtuosity in pages written especially for them, as if each section in turn were the solo instrument.
