«Четвёртая симфония [Антона Брукнера] имела самое длинное и самое сложное сочинение среди всех симфоний», — писал американский музыковед Б. М. Корстведт. Фактически, Брукнер трудился над семью версиями и редакциями с 1874 по 1888 год! Названная самим Брукнером «Романтическая», Четвёртая изображает день из жизни аристократа Средневековья: «Средневековый город — На гордых конях рыцари вырываются на простор» для первого движения Allegro; «Забытая любовь» для второго; «Танцевальная мелодия во время обеденного перерыва на охоте» для третьего Scherzo. Только четвёртое и финальное движение, радостное Allegro moderato, не имеет программного описания, как будто Брукнер хотел придерживаться эстетики non finito («не закончено»)!

The Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major, called “Romantic” by Bruckner himself, is a pinnacle of classical music of all ages.
