“Prague doesn’t let go, either of you or me. This little mother has claws,” wrote author Franz Kafka in 1902 in a letter to his friend, art historian Oskar Pollak. This is a sentiment shared by another Czech genius: Antonin Dvořák. His Slavonic Dances, Op. 72 reflects a passionate yet restless patriotic contribution. This is proved by the great musical variety of its movements, featuring Molto vivace, Allegro, Grazioso e lento…but above all the Šparcika No. 5, also paradoxically known as the walker’s dance, comprising a slow part and a fast section, with multiple variations in time signature.
