Morgen ("Tomorrow"), Op. 27 No. 4, is the final piece in a collection of four Lieder written by Richard Strauss in 1894. The complete set of four Lieder, Op. 27, served as a wedding gift from the composer to his wife, Pauline Strauss-De Ahna. And the title itself is inspired by the poem of the same name written by poet John Henry Mackay, which appears to foreshadow the happiness of their approaching union. With such joyous auspices, Morgen has become one of Strauss's most renowned and frequently recorded works. In fact, the composer himself recorded no fewer than three versions.

With 1. Ruhe, meine Seele!, 2. Cäcilie, 3. Heimliche Aufforderung, the lied Morgen, No. 4 was composed by Richard Strauss as a wedding gift to his wife, Pauline Strauss-De Ahna. The verses by poet J. H. Mackay that inspired Strauss to compose Morgen, Op. 27 No. 4 seem to evoke a day of happiness and tenderness: Und morgen wird die Sonne wieder scheinen/und auf dem Wege, den ich gehen werde,/wird uns, die Glücklichen sie wieder einen ("Tomorrow the sun will shine again/and on the path I will take,/it will unite us once again, we who are happy"). Moreover, the image of the sunrise that permeates Morgen was undoubtedly dear to Strauss's heart. After all, it is on this image that the titanic symphonic poem Thus Spoke Zarathustra opens.
