Турандот — незавершённое произведение в трёх актах Джакомо Пуччини, основанное на либретто Джузеппе Адами и Ренато Симони. Название вдохновлено именем Турандот, принцессы средневекового и вымышленного Китая. Молодая женщина бросает вызов дворянам своей страны: она отдаст свою руку и своё королевство тому, кто решит три загадки её собственного изобретения. Проигравшие? Головы с плеч! Всё меняется, когда неизвестный принц Калаф ставит Турандот на испытание… Постепенно замёрзшее сердце принцессы начинает таять и гореть любовью к Калафу, и они поют нежный и романтический дуэт, кульминацию их страсти. Пуччини говорит об этом в таких терминах: «Дуэт! Дуэт! Всё, что решающее, красивое, живое и театральное, происходит в нём! [...] Их любовь должна прийти, как огненный шар, врывающийся в толпу, охваченную экстазом и начинающую гармонизировать, как струны виолончелей.»

Turandot is an unfinished work by Puccini, eliciting two kinds of reactions. On one side lies the emblematic gesture of Arturo Toscanini who, during the premiere of the work, stopped the performance in the middle of the third act declaring that: “The piece ends here, as the Maestro died here.” On the other side, the publishing house Ricordi gave Franco Alfano the hard task of finishing the opera. But criticisms were not lacking and Alfano was obliged to rearrange his work, to reflect Puccini’s intentions more closely. It is this version of Puccini’s Turandot, the one completed by Alfano, that is nowadays played the most.
