One of the most legendary ballet companies in history, the Kirov Ballet (now known as the Mariinsky Ballet) has been defining the artform for nearly three centuries since its founding in St. Petersburg’s Winter Palace in 1740. This legendary troupe has premiered some of the world’s most beloved ballets, including The Nutcracker, La Bayadère, Raymonda, Sleeping Beauty, and so many more—and this stunning compilation, the product of five years of archival research, made some of their most indelible twentieth-century performances available for the first time in the West!
Marvel at this veritable treasure trove of Russian ballet, featuring (among many others) the breathtaking pas de deux from Raymonda danced by Irina Kolpakova and Vladilen Semenov; astonishing 1920 footage of the great Tamara Karsavina; Mikhail Baryshnikov at the height of his powers in 1969; and the only extant footage of Rudolf Nureyev with the Kirov, in the renowned pas de deux from Le Corsaire, and the pas de six from Laurencia.
