The Bolshoi Ballet, one of the best-known and most widely lauded ballet companies in history, was founded in 1776 in Moscow—thirty-six years after the Kirov Ballet in Saint Petersburg. The two extraordinary companies pushed each other, over the decades and the centuries, to seek ever greater heights and to develop their own unique styles; the Bolshoi's, sometimes considered more lively and athletic than that of the Kirov, has been articulated and refined by some of the most legendary names ever to grace the ballet stage.
