Program notes

In 2011, Carnegie Hall commemorated its 120th anniversary with an all-star cast: conductor Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic, pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Gil Shaham, and multi-award winning singer and actress Audra McDonald.

Hosted and narrated by Audra McDonald, this festive concert program weaves together classics of European Romanticism with jazzy favorites by Ellington and Gershwin. McDonald complements the musicians' accomplished performances with interesting anecdotes and stories about the hall’s history: for example, did you know that Carnegie Hall’s 1891 inaugural concert was led by none other than Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky himself? A beautiful musical moment worth revisiting!
