Alfredo Kraus

Edelmiro Arnaltes — Pianist

Program notes

Rediscover a vibrant 1993 recital by tenor Alfredo Kraus at the Palacio de Fernán Nuñez in Madrid, alongside pianist Edelmiro Arnaltes, accompanist to the greatest singers of his generation, such as Christa Ludwig, Renata Scotto, and José Carreras.

Recognized for his spotless vocal technique, honed by extensive work with the great pedagogue Mercedes Llopart (also a mentor to Renata Scotto), the Spanish tenor reached global acclaim when he sang the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata opposite the legendary Maria Callas at the San Carlos Theatre in Lisbon in 1958. He then embraced the greatest roles in French and Italian Romantic opera, while never exceeding the limits of his voice: a wise approach that granted him an incredibly long career, and a timbre that dazzled audiences well into his twilight years.
