Program notes

Meet maestra Karina Canellakis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra for an eclectic program at the BBC Proms, in London's Royal Albert Hall! The concert begins with one of the orchestra's favorite works, Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, a vibrant and heroic emotional journey inspired by Shakespeare's Coriolanus. Cellist Alisa Weilerstein then makes her entrance for a memorable rendition of Shostakovich's profound yet humorous Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major, a piece dedicated to his great friend, legend Mstislav Rostropovich! Next comes young American composer Andrew Norman's energetic and subversive Spiral, which precedes Rachmaninov's virtuosic Symphonic Dances, concluding the evening in style.
