Program notes

Experience the genius of pianist Kirill Gerstein in one of the most legendary and monumentally moving works ever composed for the instrument, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, recorded live at the spectacular Gewandhaus in Leipzig under legendary maestro Semyon Bychkov!

This Romantic masterpiece, admired as much for its dazzling virtuoso passages as for its sumptuous expressive palette and memorable melodies (taken up more than once in popular music decades later), represents one of the pinnacles of the piano repertoire—a challenge to which only a pianist of Gerstein's calibre is able to rise with such success. Gerstein follows the concerto with a spectacular showpiece, the Etude for the Left Hand by Felix Blumenfield—you'll have to see it to believe that you're hearing only one hand play…
