Program notes

The four hands of Leif Ove Andsnes and Bertrand Chamayou pirouette around the piano during this concert held as part of the 37th Klavier-Festival Ruhr! Gracing the stage at the Kunstpalast Museum in Düsseldorf, the duo juxtaposes the tragedy in Schubert’s four-hand piano works with the scientific virtuosity of Bach and the colorful Jàkétok (translated as “games for piano”) by György Kurtág.

The concert opens with the arrival of the duo who, after a rather elegant bow to the audience, place themself at the solitary grand piano on stage. The first notes, played by Leif Ove Andsnes are met quickly by the rushing hands of Bertrand Chamayou, of the Grand Rondeau in A Major by Schubert. The two pianists allow one another the space to blossom in a programme consisting of some of the most beautiful music in the piano repertoire, played with grace and energy, and guided by the magic of the score as well as the artistic sensibility of the interpreters.
