Program notes

As part of the 2016 exhibition Icons of Modern Art: The Shchukin Collection at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, Thomas Adès and Kirill Gerstein perform this electrifying recital for two pianos, offering a tapestry rich in colors and textures to the masterpieces adorning the museum’s walls.

Adès, renowned for his operas and orchestral works, and Gerstein—"gloriously free and unfazed by technical difficulties"—interpret dynamic works by heavy hitters Debussy, Stravinsky, and Ravel, passing through the daring rhythmic and harmonic experimentation of Lutosławski, and giving the European premiere of a concert paraphrase on Powder Her Face, one of Adès's own operas!
