The great Sir Simon Rattle leads the Czech Philharmonic in an epic concert marking the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, joined by marvelous mezzo Magdalena Kožená live at the Rudolfinum in Prague!
The Velvet Revolution was a watershed moment in the history of the former Czechoslovakia, which saw the end of 41 years of single-party communist rule in November 1989. The Czech Philharmonic's yearly commemorative concert celebrates the democratic ideals of civilization, with this year's program reflecting a pan-European cosmopolitan sensibility that embraces the folk heritage of many nations. It begins with the gorgeous Five Greek Folk Songs by Ravel, interpreted by the marvelous mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená—who continues with Bartók's Five Hungarian Folk Songs, an enchanting cycle with remarkable orchestration. To conclude on the most memorable of notes: Mahler's formidable Ninth Symphony, a musical reflection of humanity and a profound statement on life and death.
