Program notes
The world-renowned Quatuor Ébène teams up with pianist Mao Fujita at the 2024 Verbier Festival for a moving chamber program that runs the gamut of emotions. The four Ébène musicians begin with the sparkling String Quartet No. 21 by Mozart, composed in 1789 for King Frederick William II of Prussia, followed by the unsettling String Quartet No. 3 by Alfred Schnittke, a somber and modern work that deftly blends a great variety of styles. Verbier mainstay Mao Fujita then joins the festivities for Dvořák's sumptuous Piano Quintet No. 2, a masterpiece inspired by the Czech folk tradition, suffused with a light and irresistible charm.
