Program notes

Maestro Vasily Petrenko leads the Verbier Festival Orchestra in an all-Tchaikovsky programme brimming with romantic splendor. Superstar pianist Nikolai Lugansky showcases Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, a masterpiece recognizable by its opening horn call that introduces a sequence of dramatic piano chords underlining a lyrical orchestral melody. The magic continues with Act II of Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet, The Nutcracker, where protagonist Clara and the Nutcracker Prince arrive at the extraordinary Land of the Sweets. The second act includes the glorious Waltz of the Flowers, whimsical Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and poignant Pas de Deux: some of Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful and emotive music.
