A living legend, a force of nature, and a pianist of seemingly unlimited capabilities, Martha Argerich is one of the biggest names in classical music and one of the artists most intimately associated with the Verbier Festival. From her early years as a child prodigy to her victory at the International Chopin Competition in 1965, her rare and invariably sold-out recitals to her unassailable recordings of Beethoven, Bach, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Schumann (to name only a few), she has proven herself time and again as a consummate artist, a pianist of astonishing technique and “the unerring naturalness of phrasing that allows [her] to embody the music rather than interpret it” (The New Yorker). Largely eschewing solo performances since the 1980s, she prefers to share the stage with friends like Mischa Maisky, Gidon Kremer, and the Capuçons—and the Verbier Festival has been an ideal venue for these storied collaborations. Tune in to see some of the concerts that have won her legions of devotees and made her one of the festival’s key figures!
