Program notes

Considered a worthy successor to Django Reinhardt, Biréli Lagrène started playing the guitar when he was only four years old and quickly proved to be a true prodigy. The 2021 edition of the Maisons-Laffitte Jazz Festival welcomes him, in the company of André Ceccarelli (drums) and Diego Imbert (double bass).

Throughout this unforgettable concert, the trio plays alongside the Orchestre National d’Ile de France and establishes a musical dialogue with the violins and cellos of the orchestra, conducted by Dylan Corlay. Guitar and bass respond to each other gently and craft a moment suspended in time, in stark contrast to the frenetic and thrilling rhythm of Biréli Lagrène’s improvisation on Romberg and Hammerstein’s Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise. The guitarist, in addition to being a remarkable musician, proves to also be an excellent composer, having written half of the pieces performed here! The talent of the other two musicians makes the evening even more spectacular, and a work by the trio brings the evening to a perfect conclusion.
