Program notes

During this tender performance, the piano/voice duo of Cécile McLorin Salvant and Sullivan Fortner creates an introverted and intimate artistic symbiosis. A young Franco-American jazz singer, Cécile McLorin Salvant first came to the public’s attention for her covers of standards. At only 27 she was hailed by critics for her fourth album, Dreams and Daggers, which earned her a Grammy. Here, at the Lieu Unique in Nantes, she gifts us with an admirable moment of covers combining French chanson artists such as Léo Ferré or Barbara, jazz figures such as Bob Dorough, or Anglo-Saxon pop such as Elton John.

At her side is Sullivan Fortner, a long-time collaborator of the late Roy Hargrove, who adds a perfect technical mastery of accompaniment to this fertile mix of musical genres, marvelously complementing the vocal nuances of the singer. Throughout this concert, they do not only demonstrate their remarkable musical and rhythmic ease, but their own tender and lyrical vision of the duo as well: a formation with infinite potential for conversation and combination...
