Program notes

Renowned Cuban trumpeter and composer of the soundtracks to director Clint Eastwood's films The Mule and Richard Jewell, Arturo Sandoval sets Stuttgart alight for the 2023 edition of the Jazzopen festival! A student at the National School of Arts in Havana, Sandoval joined the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music in 1967. A few years later, this group gave birth to Irakere, of which he became an active member alongside Paquito D'Rivera and Chucho Valdés. For a little over a decade, his trumpet sounded in concert halls the world over, before settling permanently in Miami, Florida, where he fled his country's violent communist regime. A veritable declaration of love to his Cuban roots, his colorful, bouncy trumpet playing takes us on a journey to the Cuba of 50 years ago—accompanied exceptionally for this concert by his friend, cymbalist Marius Preda!
