Lalah Hathaway
Program notes
From Summertime to A Song For You, Lalah Hathaway is transforming Sing Jazz 2018 into a true R&B and Soul scene. This iconic African-American R&B singer, with nearly 35 years of musical experience and multiple awards for her work, is also one of three daughters of singer Donny Hathaway, a soul icon who died under enigmatic circumstances at only 33. Here, she performs—with her warm contralto voice—a mix of original compositions and covers of the greatest pop, jazz and soul songs.
Her vocal quality has earned her widespread success with audiences, in particular thanks to her 2014 association with the instrumental fusion group Snarky Puppy, which marked the beginning of four years of consecutive Grammy awards. One of the elements that sets her apart is the colorful roundness of her voice as well as her perfectly mastered technique. As she says herself, her goal is to convey feelings and emotions to the audience: “like my father, I want to leave behind a legacy of sound that really makes people feel something, whether it's joy, sadness, grief or sorrow.”
This is just one of over 500 amazing jazz concerts available on medici.tv!
