Program notes

In 2019, the Dmitri Hvorostovsky Festival paid tribute to the legendary Russian baritone who left us too soon, at just 55 years of age, in 2017. This concert at the Krasnoyarsk Philharmonic Hall in Hvorostovsky's hometown presents two rarely heard operas by Sergei Rachmaninov: Aleko and The Miserly Knight, whose baritone roles demand a formidable vocal technique on par with that of Hvorostovsky himself.

The baritone roles are interpreted here by Sergei Leiferkus, renowned for his expansive timbre that lends itself impeccably to the greatest repertoire of late Romanticism. Other celebrated voices are on the bill as well, like tenor Mikhail Pirogov and soprano Elena Gusev, joining the outstanding Siberian State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Vladimir Lande.
