The Piano Sonata in B minor, S. 178 is a piano solo work by the Hungarian master Franz Liszt, composed in Weimer between 1852 and 1853. The piece, however, was premiered only 5 years later, in Berlin, by the famous pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow. Contrary to the most playful and peaceful works in Liszt’s repertoire, such as Rhapsodies hongroises, the Piano Sonata in B minor is built around a strong thematic opposition (underlined by its form of the “two themed sonata”) that requires the pianist to have a complete mastery of the instrument. For these reasons, the Piano Sonata in B minor has earned a place as one of the major pieces by Liszt, alongside his Douze études d’exécution transcendante and the cycle Années de pèlerinage. It is thus unsurprising that Richard Strauss reacted positively to the work: “If Liszt had written only this Sonata in B minor, a gigantic work from a single cell, it would have been enough to demonstrate the strength of his mind.”

The Piano Sonata in B minor, S. 178 is a solo piano work by the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. Composed in Weimer between 1852 and 1853, the work is dedicated to Robert Schumann. However, one might wonder if the dedicatee appreciated this move, given that his wife, the famous Clara Schumann, wrote in one of her letters about Liszt’s Sonata in B minor: “What a noise with no reason. Hardly any healthy thinking, everything is confused in it!” But luckily, Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor has received more generous judgments, starting with Camille Saint-Saëns, who, in 1914, transcribed the piece for two pianos; or even Wagner himself, who, in a letter addressed to the composer, said: “My dearest Franz! You are close to me here—the sonata is indescribably beautiful, great, lovable, profound, and noble: sublime, as you are. It touched my very heart and all at once, all the misery of London is forgotten.” Enjoy the best interpretations of Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor and many others masterpieces by the Hungarian composer on medici.tv, your #1 classical streaming platform.
