Christophe Rousset and his inimitable ensemble Les Talens Lyriques invite you to one of the most famous venues in classical music history, the Opera House in Bayreuth, Germany, to experience a rare masterpiece of Baroque music: Ifigenia in Aulide by Italian composer Nicola Porpora. This master of voices wrote this opera in 1735 for the greatest singers of his time, including his pupil Farinelli, who created the role of Achilles.
At the 2024 edition of the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival, countertenor Max Emmanuel Cenčić caused a sensation by taking on both the role of Stage Director and that of Agamemnon. Agamemnon has outraged the goddess Diana by killing one of the stags under her protection, she demands vengeance in the form of the sacrifice of Princess Iphigenia, sung to perfection by soprano Jasmin Delfs. As Agamemnon tries to trick his way out of killing his own daughter, Ulysses and the priest Calchas convince him to appease the goddess before launching his expedition against the city of Troy, but Achilles' cunning and Iphigenia's devotion are to be reckoned with...
