Premiered in Dresden in 1911, The Knight of the Rose (or Der Rosenkavalier in German) is an opera in three acts by Richard Strauss, with a libretto by the renowned Viennese writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The composition of the work lasted more than two years, with an intense exchange of letters between the two German-speaking geniuses. Their collaboration was one of the most successful; in one of his letters, Strauss wrote enthusiastically to Hofmannsthal, "You are Da Ponte and Scribe in one person." The result could only have exceeded his expectations! The opera was a resounding success and Strauss was named an honorary citizen of the city of Vienna. Since its premiere at the Wiener Staatsoper, Der Rosenkavalier has been performed over 975 times!

Der Rosenkavalier tells a captivating tale of love, cross-dressing, and intrigue set in 18th-century Viennese society. The plot of Der Rosenkavalier may seem complex, but in a letter to Strauss, the librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote: “The rhythm of the action is understandable even to the most naive and simple audience: a crude, old, and arrogant suitor, supported by the father, is supplanted by a dashing young man..." Indeed, the Austrian writer drew inspiration from Molière's comedies, and his characters adhere to the traditions of Italian commedia dell'arte, creating a sense of farcical comedy. The immense charm of Der Rosenkavalier is thus owed to Strauss' extensive use of waltzes (historically incorrect but musically brilliant).
