Fabio Luisi conducts Stravinsky, Beethoven, and Strauss

The centerpiece of this exceptional program is the mystical Symphony of Psalms—one of the greatest works by the eccentric Stravinsky, never one to shy away from controversy. In this adaptation of the Biblical psalms for choir, orchestra, and two pianos, the composer is unafraid to flout both musical and religious conventions, notably by inverting the order of the verses between the first and second movements.

To mark Denmark’s Constitution Day, celebrate with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, in top form under the direction of Maestro Fabio Luisi. The program begins with Richard Strauss's Don Juan, a sublime symphonic poem composed at just 24 years of age that helped launch Strauss to international renown. Stravinsky's symphonic masterpiece then gives way to another by Beethoven: the beloved Third. The Eroica Symphony stretched the genre to its very limits and emblematized Beethoven’s mastery of theme and development—needless to say, it sounds every bit as fresh and essential today.
