Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 in E Major is one of the most well-known and frequently played compositions of the Austrian composer. Its success was immediate from its premiere on December 30, 1884 in Leipzig. In contrast to his other symphonies (notably his Symphony No. 4), Bruckner did not rework his Symphony No. 7 in E Major and there is only one version. Admittedly, during the Adagio, performers sometimes add a cymbal stroke which is not in the original score, but is noted elsewhere by Bruckner, who hesitated to add it in for good. Bruckner composed his Symphony No. 7 in E Major between 1881 and 1883, and the premiere took place on December 30, 1884 in Leipzig. This symphony in four movements is dedicated to King Ludwig II of Bavaria yet it simultaneously seems to commemorate Wagner, whom Bruckner greatly admired. Indeed, in 1882, while composing his Symphony No. 7 in E Major, Bruckner went to Bayreuth where he met the German composer once more. Wagner died in 1883, and it was at this time that Bruckner composed the Adagio of his Symphony No. 7 in E Major, which took the form of a funerary tribute. Moreover, Bruckner used the Wagnerian tuba for the first time, an instrument conceptualised by Wagner in collaboration with the musical instrument maker Adolphe Sax.
