The Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor, Op. 40 was composed by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1934. It was a time of great emotional turmoil for the Russian composer: in fact, during a festival performance of his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Shostakovich, married, met a young student and fell in love with her. The result was a marital crisis with his wife, Nina Varzar. During this period of loneliness and distress, the Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor was composed in just a few days. It premiered the same year, on December 25. Shostakovich and Nina reconciled, and their first daughter was born two years later, in 1936.

After the enthusiasm and creative fires of the artistic avant-garde in the late 1920s and the early 1930s, Shostakovich wished to move in the direction of greater simplicity and clarity in his compositions. The result of this artistic diversion was the Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor, Op. 40. The simplicity of its style counterbalances the turbulent sentimental life of the Russian composer at the time of its composition. With this partition, Shostakovich creates one of the most memorable works in his whole repertoire. The Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor shows a great mastery of chamber music, and it is now considered one of the most important compositions in the whole cello production, having gained an essential place in the best concert halls from all over the world.
