Program notes
In this magnificent recital from 1986 called Chopin pour ma douce ("Chopin For My Sweetheart"), Friedrich Gulda performs some of Frédéric Chopin’s most adored compositions for piano. The audience of the Munich Philharmonie hold their breath, awaiting for the arrival of Gulda to perform, first of all, the Nocturne in A-flat major. The outstanding knowledge of counterpoint, the awareness of harmony, and the exploration of musical structure in this nocturne fully demonstrates the genius of Chopin’s writing. Friedrich Gulda then performs the majestic Barcarolle in F-sharp major, followed by nine of the widely appreciated 24 Preludes. The delicate variations of the sublime Berceuse in D-flat major highlight the virtuosity and outstanding musicianship of Friedrich Gulda.
