Program notes

Join celebrated pianist Kirill Gerstein for a concert live from the Verbier Church with a program dedicated to the sonata!

The festivities commence with Stravinsky’s Piano Sonata. Incisive and charming, the work is considered a masterpiece of the genre. Kirill Gerstein continues with Schubert’s masterful Sonata No. 19 in C Minor—a fascinating piece in which the composer displays a wealth of imagination in terms of rhythm and nuance. The enchanting adagio gives way to a lively menuetto. To conclude this brilliant concert, the pianist performs Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B Minor. Exceptional in structure, this piece does not consist of several separate movements, but includes one single movement lasting around thirty minutes—like a prolonged breath—which further underlines the intensity of the music.
