Program notes
Born in 1999, the exceptionally talented British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason has already established himself as one of the most widely acclaimed musicians on the planet, lauded by critics and audiences alike. He is one of seven Junge Wilde (literally "young wild ones," referring to the vanguard of young artists redefining their art form) at Konzerthaus Dortmund, presenting exciting young musicians on their way to the top in their natural habitat: a world-class concert hall with incredible acoustics.
Sheku teams up here with pianist Harry Baker for a program that truly breaks the mold, featuring a memorable mix of classical favorites (including the duo's own arrangements for cello and piano), 20th- and 21st-century popular songs, jazz standards, and improvisations. With a fresh take on everything from Bach and Mahler to Nadia Boulanger, Herbie Hancock and Gwilym Simcock to Big Thief and San Fermin, Kanneh-Mason and Baker bring a remarkable variety of influences together for a cohesive and utterly delightful evening.
