Program notes

The Concours de Genève - International Music Competition, founded in 1939 as the Concours International d'Exécution Musicale (CIEM), is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious international music competitions. With the aim to discover, promote, and support young talented artists on the way to an international career, the Concours de Genève also has the distinction of spotlighting different disciplines in every edition. In 2024, it's time for composers and singers to take center stage!

In this first of two sessions to qualify for the Final Round, the eight talented Semi-Finalists — collectively spanning nearly the full range of human vocal capabilities with a baritone, a tenor, two mezzo-sopranos, and four sopranos — each perform a program comprising arias taken from operas, operettas, or zarzuelas of three different periods and in three different languages. Who will show off the greatest variety here (and in the Lieder / song Semi-Final) and impress the judges enough to move on to the Final?
