Welcome to the iconic Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, whose stage has played host to many brilliant minds over the centuries, including J.R.R. Tolkien and Stephen Hawking. The "city of dreaming spires," one of my favorite cities in the world, welcomed three titans of classical music in 2010 for the Berliner Philharmoniker's annual Europakonzert. The orchestra, under the baton of maestro Daniel Barenboim, joined cellist Alisa Weilerstein in an intense and elegant interpretation of a piece that richly deserves its place in the pantheon of English music: Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor. And that's not all — stick around for Brahms's triumphant First Symphony as well!
