Staff pick of the week

The sound of the piano has been a constant and reassuring presence in my life, with music by Schumann, Fauré, and Debussy, as well as Albéniz and Granados, forming the soundtrack of many of my earliest memories. This concert by Adam Laloum, whom I was lucky enough to see in concert (and meet briefly) a few years ago in Normandy, falls in the sweet spot between my love for the piano as an instrument and for its unique repertoire. Laloum's delicate playing in Schumann's Davidsbündlertanze (especially in the second piece, Innig), and his ability to add tension and interest to each repeated figure in Schubert's Sonata No. 18, lift me into a state of reverie and remind me of my most comforting piano memories. This classic recital from the 2010 Verbier Festival is the perfect opportunity to rediscover one of today's most fascinating artists, an original who continues to surprise year in and year out.
